This course will consist of two field trips into the cities of San Francisco and Oakland in which we will examine such topics as . . . .

- environmental racism -

- social control -

- the spatial manifestations of wealth and poverty -

 

Field trip Number One:

We will canvass the West Oakland neighborhood, culminating in a visit of Oakland’s Peoples Grocery http://www.peoplesgrocery.org/content/. On this trip we will explore how issues of race, poverty and residential location intersect with questions of health, healthcare, and nutrition.

Field Trip Number Two:

Our second field trip will take us to the heart of San Francisco’s Civic Center, Union Square, and Tenderloin districts where we will spend the day observing the various ways social order is created and enforced in urban environments

Prerequisites:

No particular geography or field experience class is necessary for this class. All you need is a bit of curiosity and a sense of adventure.

Course Work:

Course work will include attendance at all meeting and fieldtrips, a total of 4 short readings (assigned prior to each fieldtrip) and two written response papers. Assessment will be based on attendance and written work.
