Internships in Geography

Students are encouraged to take an internship in order to gain experience and better prepare themselves for the job market.

Ideas for Internships

See the Internship Ideas Page on this Website.

Signing Up

You first pick up an internship form from Admissions and Records, or from the Department office.

You will not sign up for the course through PeopleSoft. Instead, you will fill out the internship form in consultation with your advisor. S/he will pass the form along for signatures to the Chair and Dean, and it will then be submitted to Admissions and Records.

You will be signed up for GEOG499. Internship credit is earned as follows: 1 unit of credit for every 3 hours of work per week for 15 weeks, for a total of 45 hours per semester per unit of credit . Students may sign up for a minimum of 2 units and a maximum of 5 units.

The deadline for turning in the form is by the last day to add/drop a class. Check the academic calendar for the exact date.

You do not have to put in all your hours during the 15 week semester, but you have to complete the hours by the end of the semester in which you are applying for credit. Grade option: CR/NC only.

Eligibility for Internship

Please be aware that Geography requires that students signing up for internships must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA. If you do not meet this requirement or do not intend to complete a formal internship through the department, please do not indicate or suggest that you are representing SSU in seeking an internship.

Assignments and Getting Credit

At the end of your internship, you will submit a 2-page essay to your Advisor describing your duties, experiences, and personal observations, including how this experience contributed to your geography education.

You must also obtain a letter from your employer or supervisor describing how you did, and verifying the number of hours that you worked.

FYI: You are not covered by SSU's workers' comp policies during an internship.  If you have any concerns over this issue, you should talk to the agency for whom you plan to work and ask about their policy before signing up.

Scholarship

A $100 scholarship is available through the SSU School of Social Sciences to support your internship. Please see THIS APPLICATION FORM for information on how to apply.
