Calpine Corp.- Summer Intern

Summer Task: Felsite Study

The felsite intrusive underlies most of the Geysers geothermal field. The geometry of the felsite and the distribution of fractures within it and around it are critical parameters for establishing drilling targets. Studies done by previous geothermal operators have quantified these parameters over limited portions of the felsite. Also, in many of the older wells, felsite was probably encountered but not recognized. The project scope is as follows:

Review the previous studies.

1. Review existing well logs and identify where felsite may have been penetrated but not logged. Travel to the EGI rock storage facility in Salt Lake City and examine cuttings as available to determine whether felsite was drilled in these cases.

2. Assemble all felsite data and analyze the statistical distribution of steam entries.

3. Develop models and guidelines for permeability distribution within the felsite.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
We are looking for an upper-division or graduate student interested in igneous petrology.
