GERONTOLOGY PROGRAM
Connections Across Generations

Contact Us
Susan Hillier, Ph.D. e-mail
Dr. Hillier, Coordinator of the Gerontology Program and Associate Professor
of Psychology, teaches Psychology of Aging, Transitions in Adult Development,
Sibling Relations in Adulthood, and other courses in adulthood and later
life development. In these classes students conduct interviews to learn,
among other things, that remembered stories and life narratives are basic
data to understanding late life development. The Connections Across Generations
class, in which conversations (narratives) between elders and students
is integrated with classroom training in group work with elders, forms
an important addition to the Gerontology Program curriculum.
Madeleine Rose, D.S.W. e-mail
Dr. Rose, the Connections Across Generations course instructor, is a new
Lecturer in the Gerontology Program and Sociology Department at Sonoma
State University. Prior to teaching at SSU, Dr. Rose was an Associate
Professor in the Social Work Department at California State University
Long Beach. At CSULB, she taught a model service learning course, in which
students co-facilitated support groups at Leisure World Seal Beach. After
she moved to Sonoma County, she contacted Social Science faculty at SSU,
offering ways to teach and enhance courses through service learning. Dr.
Rose collaborated to obtain the grant to develop this service learning
course and established the connections between the University and the
Community Partners. She is a licensed clinical social worker with extensive
experience working with older adults and students in the community.
