Students studying history at SSU benefit from close working relationships with core faculty. Though our department is small, we pride ourselves on offering a diverse array of courses, from ancient Rome to post-Soviet era Russia, from immigration in Mexico to the history of gender in the American West. We encourage students to take a range of courses so that they become well-versed in the history of a variety of time periods and geographic regions.

Our department offers a minor, an undergraduate major, and a terminal Masters degree. For the most part, history students at SSU go on to careers in teaching, the law, business, and journalism, but we also send some students on to PhD programs in history. Alumni of our program have gone on to study at several schools within the University of California system as well as Louisiana State University, University of Texas, Columbia University, and Cambridge University.

Our primary objectives in the department are to improve students' historical literacy and to teach them writing and analytical skillsto help them succeed in whatever career path they choose after graduation.

We welcome inquiries about our undergraduate and graduate programs, and we appreciate your interest in the study of history at Sonoma State.
