Funding

The majority of funds to cover faculty salaries and the indirect educational costs associated with the Holocaust Lecture Series: Sociology 305: Perspectives on the Holocaust and Genocide, (the academic designation for the Holocaust Lecture Series course), are provided by the Provost. The office of the Dean of the School of Social Sciences has supplemented those funds and allotted a small amount of OE for the Series, as well.

The Alliance for the Study of the Holocaust has supported the work of the Center for over twenty years through co-sponsorship of the Holocaust Lectures, which are free to the public and draw significant numbers of people from the local and larger community. The Alliance provides the funds to cover the cost of the speakers’ expenses (travel, honoraria), room use charges and incidental course related expenses (printing, photocopying, videotaping and copying expenses) for the annual lectures. The funds are paid through the Alliance’s SSU Academic Foundation trust account. The money in the Alliance account comes from donations from individuals and community organizations. Another significant source of income for the Lecture Series is the annual distribution from the Paul Benko Holocaust Educational Endowment, a foundation account established to honor the memory of Dr. Paul Benko, Professor Emeritus of Biology, a Holocaust survivor and founding member of the Center faculty advisory committee.
