Determining Initial Pay Rate & Pay Increases

To Determine the Initial Pay Rate

New Appointments are generally placed at the minimum of the appropriate pay range to allow growth within the range, and typically never placed higher than the midpoint. There are four job levels, each with corresponding pay ranges, and criteria for identifying the level. When you determine new pay rates, make sure that you review your other student assistants’ pay for internal equity. For further assistance, contact Emily Bawanan.

Providing Pay Increases
Student Assistants may receive a pay increase for merit or a change in job responsibilities. Pay increases are at the discretion of the Appropriate Administrator, and are not retroactive. For a merit pay increase, it is recommended that the student complete one semester (or an equivalent amount of time) in the same position, requires a Student Assistant Evaluation of satisfactory or better, and a statement of justification on the Student Employment Form. Students who demonstrate consistently high levels of performance above and beyond the normally expected requirements of the job can be considered for more frequent increases at the Appropriate Administrator’s discretion, and in consideration of the campus’ goal to have students receive equitable treatment and pay. Pay increases are given in increments of $0.25.

How to Process a Pay Increase
To process a pay increase, the Appropriate Administrator needs to submit a new Student Employment Form, checking the box "Pay Increase" and/or "Job Level/Position Change". Pay increases are effective on the first day of the upcoming pay period. Refer to the Student Employee Payroll Calendar for pay period dates. Complete the "Rate Justification" section on the SEF. A Student Assistant Evaluation may be attached as supporting documentation.
