General Information: The Student Health Center (SHC) is a pleasant, busy, nationally accredited, well-equipped, on-campus clinic providing quality out-patient medical, lab, x-ray, pharmacy, and heath education services to the approximately 8,500 students enrolled at Sonoma State University (SSU), a public liberal arts university located approximately 50 miles north of San Francisco in beautiful Sonoma County.
Position: Working under the general supervision of the SHC Medical Director & guided by high ethical, legal, & medical quality standards, the successful candidate will join a collaborative team of physicians, nurse practitioners and clinical support staff committed to the healthcare & health education mission of the Student Health Center. SHC physicians practice in accordance with evidence-based medicine, SHC policies & procedures, & accreditation standards. Responsibilities include evaluation & treatment of ambulatory patients with illnesses, infections, injuries, allergic, respiratory, EENT, GI, GYN, GU, neurological, musculoskeletal, skin, & mental health/psycho-social conditions. SHC physicians order & interpret x-rays, lab work, EKGs & other diagnostic tests; prescribe & administer medications & vaccines; perform basic medical, minor surgical, orthopedic, & diagnostic procedures including local anesthesia, laceration repair, phlebotomy, IVs, I & D, splinting & casting; respond to SHC & campus-wide urgent medical, infectious disease, & disaster situations; ensure documentation, confidentiality & continuity of care; collaborate & interface with on & off campus health care providers on behalf of students; & provide consultation & leadership in areas such as preventive medicine, health education, & public health. Physicians also consult with & provide medical oversight to clinical support staff, facilitate SHC productivity & cost effectiveness, & actively contribute to quality improvement, risk management, national accreditation, emergency preparedness, health promotion, outreach, and similar SHC efforts. The work environment is collegial & rewarding. Responsibilities have typically not required night or weekend work. The position is anticipated to begin in September of 2008.
Qualifications:Requires graduation with an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school recognized by the Medical Board of California; a current license to practice medicine in California with no restrictions; completion of residency training in family practice, internal medicine, ER medicine, pediatrics/adolescent medicine or other relevant primary care field; current or immediately pending American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS) certification; DEA certification; CPR/AED & ACLS certification; competence to perform all duties of this position; & progressively responsible experience in medical practice applicable to a primary care outpatient college health setting. Qualifications, credentials & experience must be confirmed by primary source verification, National Practitioner Data Bank query, references & peer review. The successful candidate must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, & ability to practice high quality evidence based medicine & ensure compliance with laws & regulations as well as ethical, medical, national accreditation, risk management, & productivity standards. Sound judgment, reliability, effective oral & written communication skills & the ability to use information technology systems are required. Experience with medical practice management & EMR software is preferred. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic about the educational, preventive, & developmental aspects of college health; & have the ability to serve as a mentor, resource, & consultant for SHC personnel. The successful candidate must be able to effectively represent the SHC & demonstrate excellent interpersonal, teamwork & patient interaction skills as well as positive work attitude, strong & reliable work ethic, sound judgment, & the ability to work independently, collaboratively, & with supervision in a busy multitasking setting. The applicant must be able to, seek consultation & solutions, implement improvements, adapt to change, role model healthy behavior, & interact with colleagues & a diverse college population with caring, warmth & inclusiveness. This position requires the physical & cognitive ability to accurately, quickly, & skillfully perform medical diagnostic & treatment procedures, speak clearly, examine & assist patients, & engage in emergency response & other activities that require strength, dexterity, visual & auditory acuity, verbal articulation skills; composure under stress, and the ability to move quickly in confined & expansive areas; work for extended uninterrupted periods; stand, stoop, reach & lift up to 40 pounds; & maintain the health status and outlook necessary to perform duties in a professional, kind, competent & productive manner without risk of harm to patients or disruption of SHC operations.(Evidence of degree(s) or certificate(s) required.)
Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, exempt position scheduled to work the equivalent of 10 compensated months per year with time off scheduled during academic break periods. The current starting salary range begins at $10,477 per month worked. Placement in the range will depend on relevant qualifications, experience, internal equity, & budget considerations. Employment in this position will lead toward permanent status following the successful completion of a probationary period.
