What
is Hutchins?
The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies is a cluster school within the larger institution of SSU. Lower-division students at Hutchins get a complete, self-contained General Education. Upper-division majors earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. Those upper-division majors who choose to pursue a multiple-subject teaching credential will also fulfill the academic requirements for teaching elementary school and receive the Multiple Subject Waiver.
Our GE Program is different.
We offer seminar-based learning in which students form a learning community dedicated to asking probing questions and exploring multiple ways of approaching them; classes are small, usually about 13 students, so that each student can be an integral part of our on-going discussions.
Our Approach is different.
We offer Integrated Subject Matter: A Thematic Approach to Learning. The lower-division General Education program consists of four 12-unit courses taken one per semester. At the end of four semesters, you will have completed all of the GE requirements, except for math. Students also take elective courses, art and physical education, and prerequisites for their future majors in other departments while enrolled in the Hutchins general education program.
