Sonoma State University offers an Interdisciplinary Master's Program, Action for a Viable Future, through the School of Extended Education. The focus of the program is to emphasize the interrelationship among ecological, economic and social justice issues and the dynamics of change.
The program will allow students to design part of their course of study. Students begin with an intensive nine-unit course
laying the foundation for understanding the interconnections among major global issues. During the next two semesters each
student pursues an individually-designed study plan of 15-units consisting of courses from different departments campus
wide.
A cohort of 10 to 12 students work collaboratively on topics related to the core issues. Individual students might focus on
environmental issues such as renewable energy or global warming, or issues related to the global economy and social justice.
The final six units of the program are an evaluation and critique of what has been learned upon which students will pool their
information and work individually or in teams to develop action plans which will then be implemented.
