- General Education: Students who complete the LIBS Major Track
II are exempt from the 9 units Upper Division General Education
requirement. Please consult your Evaluation of Transfer Credits
(ETC) to determine if you have any transfer deficiencies. If your
ETC shows Ethnic Studies at "To Do" and your are not currently
enrolled in this requirement, we recommend you take it now. Select
only a course on the general education pattern list marked with
an asterisk * to fulfill this requirement.
- Math 300 (If you have completed a Math for Elementary Teachers,
do not take this.)
- Foreign Language: Six units of one language, college level. (Note:
If you have 3 years with a B average or better in high school, you
are exempt from this requirement. You will need to obtain transcripts
from your high school for your file in the major.)
- Upper Division Field Biology: First, consult b2 of your ETC. Pattern
A: If your have taken a General Biology or Introduction to Biology
only, you may select either BIOL 312 or 385 for this requirement.
Pattern B: If you have taken any other general education Biology
such as marine biology, nutrition, environmental science or physical
anthropology, please consult Dr. McGuckin (address below) for the
appropriate course to take.
- History of the English Language: You have three options: a) ENGL
379, offered each semester but space is limited. b) LIBS 327, offered
Fall only. Can be taken only after admitted into the major. c) LING
441, (required prerequisite LING 200). This option is best for those
who have already taken Child Development & plan to select either
Language and Composition Concentration or Second Language Acquisition
Concentration. (LING 441 will count toward Major, however Child
Development units will not count toward the major. Students selecting
this option will not take LIBS 330 Children Should be Seen and Heard.)
- KIN 400: Elementary School Physical Education
- Schooling and Society: EDUC 417 School & Society, This course
fulfills state waiver requirement, but will not count toward major.
LIBS 312 Schooling & Society fulfills state requirement and
counts toward LIBS major. EDUC 417 does not include the 40 volunteer
hours in the school; LIBS 312 requires 40 hours observation in a
public school classroom. (EDUC 415 should be taken if student is
planning on ECE, only.)
- Performing Arts: Any hands-on course in visual arts (painting,
drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking, chorus,
music performance, dance, acting. THAR 460 Drama for Children or
THAR 470 Dance for Children are good choices at SSU or any units
from an accredited college. (Note: While we have offered some courses
in LIBS which cover this requirement, these may not be offered regularly.
We advise you to complete this requirement outside the major.)
- Concentration: Select a concentration (See handout or list on
the web in Hutchins Forms.) and begin coursework now. If you have
taken any equivalent courses at another college you may be able
to substitute up to two. Please consult Dr. McGuckin for approval.
