HUTCHINS SCHOOL OF LIBERAL STUDIES
Code 49012 Effective Fall, 1998
Revised 6/30/01

B.A. IN LIBERAL STUDIES

Track II Subject Matter Preparation Major

For students who intend to pursue an elementary teaching credential. The California State Teacher Licensing Board has approved the B.A. in Liberal Studies, Track II Subject Matter Preparation Major in the Hutchins School as a pre-credential academic course of study.

Upon successful completion of this program you receive
(1) a B.A. in Liberal Studies and
(2) a Multiple Subject Waiver, which exempts you from MSAT Exam, formerly the National Teachers Exam.

A student who enters this major with 60-70 university credits can complete the program in 4 semesters by taking 15-17 units each semester.

This Major also completes coursework toward the CLAD Certification (Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development Emphasis). See handout: CLAD Requirements met in the Hutchins School Subject Matter Preparation Major.

After graduation you will enroll in a professional education credential training program to complete study for the Elementary Credential. At SSU contact the Credentials Office at (707) 664-2581, Stevenson Hall 3007.

OVERVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS

Students in this Major must satisfy three sets of requirements:

B.A. In Liberal Studies
40 upper division units are required for the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies, Track II Subject Matter Preparation Major.

Pre-Credential Courses and Pre-Credential Subject Concentration are required by the California Teachers Commission. A Concentration is a specialization in a Discipline or Area. Some of these courses may be completed at your previous institution or at SSU before entering the Major. Units vary depending on student's previous coursework. Most Subject Concentrations require 12 units.

SSU Graduation Requirements
Students who complete the B.A. in Liberal Studies, Track II Subject Matter Preparation Major, receive an exemption from the SSU requirement of 9 units of upper division General Education. This exemption is stamped on the University Major Requirements Form when you apply to graduate. 124 units of university credits are required for graduation.

Advising
Before selecting courses for your first semester in the Major, consult with a Hutchins advisor. You will need to have your Evaluation of Transfer Credits and Graduation Requirements Form to determine if you are required to take any additional university requirements. Your LIBS 302 Instructor will be your Hutchins Advisor during your study here.

HOW TO FILL IN YOUR HUTCHINS MAJOR FORM AND WORKSHEET

The following KEYS:

KEY I

Hutchins Major Form

KEY II

Pre-Credential Course Requirements

KEY III

Pre-Credential Subject Concentration

KEY IV

Graduation Procedures

are designed as a line by line explanation of all requirements. Because each student's coursework is different, the Program provides maximum flexibility for transfer credit for courses already taken. Read the Keys carefully. Fill in courses already completed at SSU or a previous institution on the Worksheet. At the end of each semester, write completed courses and grades on the appropriate lines of the Hutchins Major Form and on the Worksheet.

A copy of the completed worksheet (both sides) must be in your file in order to receive your waiver.

KEY I TO THE HUTCHINS MAJOR FORM (HMF)

FILL IN YOUR COURSES ON THE HMF AS YOU COMPLETE THEM.

A-MAJOR: Liberal Studies

Catalog Years

Transfer Students: Find your Catalog Years on your Evaluation of Transfer Credits Form in the Graduation Requirements in Degree Information Box. Students who enter SSU as Freshmen: Catalog Year is the year you entered SSU.

B-GRADES

All courses listed on the HMF must be taken for a LETTER GRADE unless offered CR/NC only. All courses taken for a Letter Grade must receive a "C-" or higher. Exception: LIBS 302 must be a "C" or higher.

C- SEMINAR REQUIREMENTS

The educational philosophy of the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies emphasizes the small group learning environment of the seminar. Limited to 14 students or small group discussions, the seminar fosters students in their ability to participate actively in discussion and in their learning. STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE AT LEAST FOUR SEMINARS (12 units); LIBS 302 counts as a seminar. You may choose seminars to fulfill Core Areas, lines #4-7, or as part of the 8 units of Student Choice LIBS courses, lines #11-14, of the HMF. All LIBS 320 courses are seminars. Consult the Hutchins School Tentative Schedule of Classes handout each semester for additional seminar selections.

* Place an X under the column Seminar for a minimum of 4 LIBS seminars (including LIBS 302).

1. LIBS 302 Introduction to Liberal Studies.

This course is taken in your first semester in the Major together with LIBS 304 or 308. No other LIBS courses may be taken until LIBS 302 has been successfully completed with a"C" or higher grade. LIBS 302 may be taken only once.

College Base Exam (C-Base) is required of Track II Major students only and is scheduled early in the semester. See handout on C-Base exam for specific requirements.

 2. LIBS 304 We Hold These Truths (Fall Semester)

 3. LIBS 308 The Practice of Culture (Spring Semester)

 4-7. Core Area Courses
There are 4 Core Areas in the Major:

CORE AREA A:

Society and Self

CORE AREA B:

The Individual and Material World

CORE AREA C:

Human Experience and the Arts

CORE AREA D:

Consciousness and Reality

Seminars and courses are offered in each of these categories. Take one seminar or course in each of the 4 Core Areas. Each semester the Hutchins Tentative Schedule of Classes handout lists all courses and seminars, which fulfill Core Areas. It is recommended that you complete 3 Core Areas before your final semester. Any additional Core Area seminars and courses count toward 8 units of Student Choice LIBS # 11-14 of the HMF.

8. Upper Division Field Biology: If you have taken a general intro to biology, you should take BIOL 312 or BIOL 385.

(a)

If you have not taken an intro to biology, see Key II #1.

(b)

If you have taken an upper division course equivalent to one of these field biology courses at another university, you may substitute it with the approval of the Subject Matter Preparation Major Coordinator. Write your course on line #8 of HMF.

(c)

If you select the Life Science Subject Concentration, you may substitute any upper division course from this Concentration for this requirement. Write your selected course on line #8 of HMF

9. English Language
Select one from the following only: LIBS 327, The English Language; ENGL 379, History and Structure of English or LING 441 Linguistics and Second Language Teaching. Important: Before selecting, consult KEY II #6.

MATH 300 Elementary Number Systems and Appl. This course is 4 units; only 3 units count for the Major, line #10 of the HMF.

Exceptions:

(a)

If you have transfer credit for a 3 unit lower division Math for Elementary Teachers course, you are exempt from Math 300 with the approval of the Math Department; however, since a lower division course may not count toward the major, you may NOT substitute it for Math 300 on #10 of the HMF. You must select an additional Student Choice LIBS course to fulfill line #10 of the HMF. Important: See KEY II #2, Pattern C.

(b)

If you have transfer credit for a 3 unit upper division Math for Elementary Teachers course, you may substitute it for Math 300 on line #10 of the HMF with approval of the Math Department. Write your course on line #10 of the HMF. Important: See KEY II #2, Pattern B.

11-14. Student Choice Liberal Studies

Select at least 8 units of LIBS courses only. See exceptions below. LIBS Core Area courses or seminars taken in addition to #4-7 above count here. LIBS 312 Schooling and Society and LIBS 330 Children Should be Seen and Heard count as Student Choice LIBS. Leave #14 blank if you complete 8 units for lines #11-13.

KEY III
PRE-CREDENTIAL SUBJECT CONCENTRATION

Consult handout: "Pre-Credential Subject Concentrations" for the list of selections available at SSU. You may take courses in your Concentration before entering the Major as well as in the first semester in the Major. It is recommended that you take at least one Concentration course each semester. Consult handout "Planning Strategies for Prospective Teachers" before selecting a concentration. It can be found on the Hutchins School web page.

FILL IN THE COURSES YOU TAKE ON THE WORKSHEET.

1. You may apply up to two courses already completed at other institutions if they cover the same areas of study. A transfer course to be substituted for a Concentration requirement needs the signature of the Chair of the SSU Department of the course to be approved for substitution except for Human Development. Provide the Department Chair with a catalog description of the course you wish to substitute if the department or title is not the same as the required course at SSU.

Exception: Art Concentration may substitute up to 6 units of studio courses plus one additional course.

 2. Your completed Concentration must be at least 12 units. Minimum requirements for some Concentrations may add up to fewer than 12 units. In this case, you must take an additional course from the list.

3. Courses for the Concentration as well as Pre-Credential Course Requirements (Key II) may be taken CR/NC if they do NOT also count toward the major. For example, MATH 300 is a requirement for both the MATH Concentration and the Major; therefore, Math 300 must be taken for a letter grade. SSU allows a total of 24 units CR/NC toward Transfer Student: Consult your ETC Form for the number of units available to you. Students who have completed the Hutchins Interdisciplinary GE Program may not elect additional CR/NC units unless the units are earned in a course available only on a CR/NC basis.

 4. No Liberal Studies courses (LIBS) may be applied to a Concentration.
