Northern California Earth Institute
Course Offerings

Four discussion courses are currently available and are described below.

Deep Ecology and Related Topics (9 sessions):
What are our core values and how do they affect the way we treat the earth? This course touches on such topics as the Gaia hypothesis, voluntary simplicity, Native American wisdom, ecopsychology, and bioregionalism.

Voluntary Simplicity (8 sessions):
What are the material and psychological distractions that make life complex? What steps can we take to lead a simpler life? What is the connection between our lifestyle choices and the condition of the Earth?

Choices for Sustainable Living (9 sessions):
What are the various views of what is meant by sustainability? How do our lifestyle choices impact the Earth? What practical steps can we take to move toward ecologically sustainable lifestyles, communities, and organizations?

Discovering A Sense of Place (8 sessions):
Without a sense of place, what fills our inner void? What is the difference between living on the land and in it? What creates responsibility to place? What do you know about your bioregion? What encourages us to live in our place? How might we go about building a local community? How do we empower ourselves to care for our place? Included with this course is a supplement for Sonoma County that personalizes the discussion. We have
not yet developed a supplement for Marin County.
