What
is Hutchins?
The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies is a cluster
school within the larger institution of Sonoma State University. For lower
division students, Hutchins offers an integrated General
Education Program which provides a basic foundation for most majors
at SSU.
For upper-division students, the Bachelor
of Arts in Liberal Studies offers two distinct tracks; an interdisciplinary
liberal arts program (Track 1)
and a subject matter preparation program for students who plan to pursue
a career in elementary education (Track
2). In addition, Hutchins offers an accelerated Blended Program
(Track 3), which allows
students to complete both a BA in Liberal Studies and an elementary teaching
credential in four years.
Our GE Program is different.
We offer seminar-based learning in which students form a learning community
dedicated to asking probing questions and exploring multiple ways of approaching
them; classes are small, usually about 14 students, so that each student
can be an integral part of our on-going discussions.
Our Approach is different.
We offer integrated subject matter and a thematic approach to learning.
The lower division General Education Program
consists of four 12-unit courses taken one per semester. At the end of
four semesters, you will have completed all of the lower division GE requirements, except
for math. Students also take elective courses, art and physical education,
and prerequisites for their future majors in other departments while enrolled
in the Hutchins General Education Program.
