This College Assistance
Migrant Program (CAMP) refines an existing network among three Institutions
of Higher Education and the regional Migrant Education Program to specifically
address the diverse educational levels and needs of students from a migrant/seasonal
farm worker background. CAMP also addresses the different levels of educational
preparation among these students by creating learning communities that include
students, families, and college personnel, and serves as a conduit from
the rural areas directly to a four-year university or via a local community
college.
CAMP partnership includes Sonoma State University, Napa Valley College,
and Santa Rosa Junior College as well as the regional Migrant Education
Program, and 19 partner agencies/programs. CAMP uses this network to provide
services to 60 migrant students in the Northwest California area each
year.
The planning committee has identified the following needs in regards
to migrant students:
- The low rate of college matriculation and degree completion.
- The low level of entry basic skills.
- The significant gaps in infrastructure at the partner campuses to
support and retain the students.
The primary project goal, therefore, is to give every student in the
Collaborative CAMP program the academic and social skills to complete
coursework successfully, and to understand and participate in diverse
college activities that support colleges success such as receiving on-going
financial aid, academic advisement, tutorials, career guidance, and counseling.
Beyond skill building, the goal is to help every student become a life-long
learner, that is, an active participant in his own education and in his
community.
