Becoming
a Member of the
Student Congress
|
To recruit Congressstudents
can be a difficult enterprise because sometimes the leaders who are identified
by teachers are not those identified by students. And the leaders elected
by students are often not leaders in a strict sense but the winners of a
popularity contest. A good way to find potential Congressstudents is to
announce that applications are available to all students. Those who take
the personal initiative to fill out and return the applications with the
one dollar application fee can then be considered as candidates for membership.
The important point is allow for different styles (and circumstances) of
leadership. Organizing a gang, taking care of several younger siblings,
acting as the translator for his or her parents who do not speak English
demonstrate as much leadership potential as other more conventional activities.
The most important point to remember is that the initiative must come from
the young people.
Any high school student is eligible to become a Congressstudent and
represent her/his high school in a given county or region, provided that
s/he does the following:
- fills out an application, and submit it by a given deadline with
a one-dollar fee;
- interviews with Congressstudents and/or the Congressional Staff;
- shows leadership in terms of demonstrated skills to
- take the initiative to engage in the struggle for social justice,
follow through with her or his punctual commitment,
become informed to discuss social issues.
