Introduction and Purpose

What's in a Name?

In essence, a brand or identity is a reputation; a feeling that is evoked when a person sees or hears something. A successful identity reinforces who we are and the qualities that distinguish Sonoma State University from other universities. A strong visual identity contributes to Sonoma State's reputation, thereby its ability to recruit outstanding students, faculty and staff; and to engage alumni and the community.

Today we know that the SSU identity embodies academic excellence, strong, smart and savvy students and alumni who affect the world in which we live. Creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and community engagement are strong attributes of a Sonoma State University education.

This toolkit was created because one of the physical aspects of an identity is a logo, or the marks that represent us. Placement of those marks, use of SSU's colors and how we refer to ourselves helps define the identity. This toolkit is intended to provide guidance on how best to showcase SSU's visual representation.

This is a living document and will be updated as needed. We invite you to look through this Identity Toolkit at your earliest convenience and contact me with any questions or suggestions.
