How to Access Your E-mail using Netscape in OS X

  1. Launch the Netscape application.
  2. If it prompts you with the "Netscape Network Registration" window, click the "Cancel" button.

  3. If it prompts you with the "Netscape offers..." window, click the "Yes" button.

  4. Click on "Window" from the top menu and select "Mail & Newsgroups".
  5. Click on "Edit" from the top menu and select "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings".
  6. Click on "Free Webmail" account on the left and click the "Remove Account" button.
  7. Click on the "OK" button.

  8. Click on the "Add Account" button.

  10. Select "E-mail Account" and click the "Next > " button.

  11. In the Identity screen, for "Your Name:" enter your name (e.g. John Smith) into the box as you would like it to appear when you send people messages.
  12. For "E-mail Address:" enter your Sonoma e-mail address (i.e. smithj@sonoma.edu for Staff/Faculty/Student) into the box.
  13. Click the "Next > " button.

  14. In the Server Information screen, for "Select the type of incoming server you are using." select "IMAP" if you are Staff/Faculty or "POP" if you are a Student. For an explanation of the difference between the two and which one will be better for you, please contact the IT Helpdesk at 664-HELP.
  15. For "Incoming Server:" enter in "mail.sonoma.edu" into the box with out the quotes.
  16. For "Outgoing Server:" enter in "smtps.sonoma.edu" into the box with out the quotes.
  17. Click the "Next > " button.

  18. In the User Names screen, for "Incoming User Name:" enter your "Seawolf ID" into the box.
  19. For "Outgoing User Name:" enter your "Seawolf ID" into the box.
  20. Click the "Next > " button.

  21. In the Account Name screen, for "Account Name:" enter in "SSU E-mail" with out the quotes.
  22. Click the "Next > " button.

  23. When the Congratulations screen is presented, verify the information. If anything is wrong use the "< Back" button to go back and edit the incorrect fields.
  24. Click the "Finish" button.

  25. In the Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings screen, Select "Server Settings" under "SSU Email" in the left side menu.
  26. Verify for "Server Name:" that the box says "mail.sonoma.edu", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  27. Verify for "User Name:" that the box says your "SeawolfID", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  28. For "Use Secure Connection (SSL)" check the box to the left of it. Note - The number in the "Port:" box above should change from 110 to 995 for POP3 and from 143 to 993 for IMAP.
  29. For "POP" accounts: Check the box next to "Empty Trash on Exit".
  30. For "IMAP" accounts: Check the box next to "Clean up (expunge) Inbox on Exit".

  31. In the SSU Email menu, select "Copies and Folders"
  32. For "Place a copy in Sent Folders on" change "mail.sonoma.edu" to "Local Folders".
  33. For "Drafts Folder on" change "seawolfid@sonoma.edu" to "Local Folders".
  34. For "Templates folder on:" change "seawolfid@sonoma.edu" to "Local Folders".

  35. Click on "Composition & Addressing" on the left side menu.
  36. Uncheck the "Compose messages in HTML format" box.

  37. Select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" fron the left side menu.
  38. Verify for "Server Name:" that the box says "smtps.sonoma.edu", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  39. Verify for "User name and password" that the box is checked.
  40. Verify for "User Name:" that the box says your "SeawolfID", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  41. For "Port" enter in "25" with out the quotes.
  42. For "Use Secure Connection (SSL):" select "TLS, if available".

  43. Click the "OK" button.
  44. Click the "Get Msgs" button.
  45. The "Unable to verify the identity of mail.sonoma.edu..." window should pop-up.
  46. Select "Accept this certificate permanently".
  47. Click the "OK" button.

  48. When prompted for "Password" enter in your "Seawolf Password" into the box.
  49. Check the "Use Password Manager to remember this password" box if you want it to remember your password each time.
  50. Click the "OK" button.
