How to Access Your E-mail using Eudora with Windows

Install Security Certificate:

  1. Go to the SSU IT Certificate page.
  2. Click on "Netscape, Mozilla & others on Windows and Macintosh Explanation".
  3. Click the Install SSU IT CA Cert link under Eudora 5.x on Windows.
  4. Click on the "Save" button.

  5. Save the "ca.cer" to your desktop.

Configure Eudora

  1. Launch Eudora
  2. If this is the first time you have run Eudora, you may see the "Introduction" window, click the "OK" button.

  3. If this is the first time you have run Eudora, you may see the "Important Notice" window, click the "OK" button.

  4. If this is the first time you have run Eudora, you may see the "New Account Wizard" window, click the "Cancel" button.

  5. Click on "Tools" from the top menu and select "Options".
  6. In the Options window, select "Getting Started" icon in the "Category:" menu.
  7. For "Real Name:" enter your name (e.g. John Smith) into the box as you would like it to appear when you send people messages.
  8. For "Return Address:" enter your Sonoma e-mail address (i.e. first.last@sonoma.edu for Staff/Faculty or seawolfid@sonoma.edu for Students) into the box.
  9. For "Mail Server (Incoming):" enter in "mail.sonoma.edu" into the box with out the quotes.
  10. For "User Name": enter your "Seawolf ID" into the box.
  11. For "SMTP Server (Outgoing):" enter in "smtps.sonoma.edu" into the box with out the quotes.
  12. Verify for "Allow Authentication" that the box is checked, if it isn't then check it.

  13. Select the "Checking Mail" icon in the "Category:" menu.
  14. Verify for "Mail Server:" that the box says "mail.sonoma.edu", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  15. Verify for "User Name:" that the box says your "SeawolfID", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  16. Verify for "Send on Check" that the box is checked, if it isn't then check it.
  17. For "Secure Sockets when Receiving" select "Required, Alternate Port" from the drop down box.

  18. Select the "Incoming Mail" icon in the "Category:" menu.
  19. For "Server Configuration:" select "IMAP" if you are Staff/Faculty or "POP" if you are a Student. For an explanation of the difference between the two and which one will be better for you, please contact the IT Helpdesk at 664-HELP.
  20. If you selected POP: For "Leave Mail on Server", verify that the box is checked.

  21. If you selected IMAP: For "IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix:" enter in "INBOX." with out the quotes

  22. Select the "Sending Mail" icon in the "Category:" menu.
  23. Verify for "Return Address:" that the box says you Sonoma e-mail address (i.e. first.last@sonoma.edu for Staff/Faculty or seawolfid@sonoma.edu for Students), if it doesn't enter it in.
  24. Verify for "SMTP Server:" that the box says "smtps.sonoma.edu", if it doesn't enter it in with out the quotes.
  25. Verify for "SMTP Relay Personality:" that "None" is selected in the drop down box.
  26. Verify for "Allow Authentication", "Immediate Send", and "Send on Check" that the boxes are checked, if they aren't then check them.
  27. For "Secure Sockets when Sending" select "Required, STARTTLS" from the drop down box.

  28. Click the "OK" button.
  29. Click on "File" from the top menu and select "Check Mail".
  30. When it prompts you for your "Password:" enter in your "Seawolf Password".
  31. Click the "OK" button.

  32. Click on "Help" from the top menu and select "Payment & Registration".
  33. For "Which Eudora is right for you?" make sure it is in "Sponsored Mode (Free, with ads)" or "Paid Mode (costs money, no ads)". Light Mode does not allow you to access your Sonoma mail.
  34. Click the "Close" button.

  35. Click on "Tools" from the top menu and select "Personalities".
  36. On the left side of your Eudora, under "Persona", right click on "<Dominant> " and select "Properties".
  37. Select the "Incoming Mail" tab.
  38. Click on the "Last SSL Info" button.

  40. You will see an error message under the "Notes" section.
  41. Click on the "Certificate Information Manager".

    Under "Server Certificates" you will see an entry that has a skull and crossbones next to it.
  42. Click on "Import Certificate".

  43. Navigate to where you saved the certificae from Step 1.
  44. Select "ca.crt".
  45. Click the "Open" button.
  46. Click the "Done" button.
  47. Click the "OK" button.
  48. Click the "OK" button.

You are done!
