How to Access Your
Email using Outlook Express with Windows
- Open Outlook Express.
- If this is the first time you have started the program, you may see an account wizard start up. If this is the case, click the "Cancel" button, and continue on to the next step.
- Click on "Tools" from the top menu and select "Accounts". The Accounts window will appear.
- Click the "Add" button and select "Mail".

- In the Your Name screen, fFor "Display Name:" enter your name (e.g. John Smith) into the box as you would like it to appear when you send people messages.
- Click the "Next" button.

- In the Internet E-mail Address screen, for "E-mail Address:" enter your Sonoma e-mail address (i.e. seawolfid@sonoma.edu) into the box.
- Click the "Next" button.

- In the E-mail Server Names screen, for the "My incoming mail server is a" drop box select "IMAP" if you are Staff/Faculty or "POP3" if you are a Student. For an explanation of the difference between the two and which one will be better for you, please contact the IT Helpdesk at 664-HELP.
- For "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server:" enter in "mail.sonoma.edu" into the box with out the quotes.
- For "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:" enter in "smtps.sonoma.edu" into the box with out the quotes.
- Click the "Next" button.

- In the Internet Mail Logon screen, for "Account Name:" enter your "Seawolf ID" into the box.
- For "Password:" enter in your "Seawolf Password" into the box.
- Uncheck the "Remember Password" check box if you want to enter in your password each time.
- Click the "Next" button.

- In the Congratulations screen, click the "Finish" button.
- Back in the Internet Accounts window, select the "mail.sonoma.edu" account.
- Click on the "Properties" button on the right.

- In the mail.sonoma.edu Properties window on the "General" tab,
change the text that says "mail.sonoma.edu" to "SSU E-mail" with
out the quotes.

- Click o n the "Servers" tab.
- Under "Outgoing Mail Server" check the box next to "My server
requires authentication"

- Click on the "Advanced" tab.
- For "Outgoing Mail (SMTP):" check the box next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
- For "Incoming Mail (POP3/IMAP):" check the box next to "This
server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
Note: The number in the box above should change from 110 to 995 for POP3 and from 143 to 993 for IMAP

- Click the "Apply" button.
- Click the "OK" button.
- Click the "Close" button.
- Click on "Tools" from the top menu, click "Send and Recieve", and select "Send and Recieve All".
- If you did not check the "Remember Password" checkbox then it will prompt you for your "Password:" - Enter in your "Seawolf Password".
You are done!
