Computing Labs

IT operates six computing labs that are available to students for class and independent use. Most of the labs are scheduled part of the time for classes, and are open to individual student use the rest of the time. One of the most popular labs is the 24 Hour Lab, located in the Jean & Charles Schulz Information Center, across from the Charlie Brown Cafe. This lab has both Macintosh and Windows OS, and a wide variety of applications, including discipline-specific software, digital video, graphics, productivity suites, and more.

Check the IT Computer Labs page for links to locations, schedules, software and more.

Computer Security

As a residential student, you must keep your computer up-to-date and secure. SSU IT provides the following assistance:

Helpdesk

The Helpdesk is your first stop for all technical support and IT service requests. Check out the following links:

Media Services

Media Services' primary function is to provide classroom technology support. You'll see the Media Services staff rolling equipment to classrooms, helping instructors with classroom computers and data projectors, and setting up video conferences. They also provide equipment checkout services to students who have faculty authorization. If you need a digital camera, slide projector, boombox or other A/V gear, Media Services is the place to go. Media Services also provides two preview rooms where students and faculty can produce or view non-print materials. VHS, Hi-8 and digital editing equipment is available in these rooms.

Check the Media Services site home page for more information about equipment checkout, preview rooms and more.

Web Accounts

Information Technology provides a web server for student web authoring. Individual students, as well as Chartered Student Organizations, may apply for a student web account. The account comes with 25 megabytes of disk space. Student web accounts are a great way to share information about yourself with others on campus or around the world, build an electronic portfolio of your academic accomplishments, or post pictures of your SSU experiences to share with family and friends at home. The IT Web Office provides assistance to students who need help accessing the web server, using web server technology, and troubleshooting problematic HTML. Students are also welcome at the workshops offered by the Web Office.

Check the Web Office site for more information about SSU web accounts and publishing on SSU's web servers.

WebCasts

Instructional Technology Services webcasts some campus events and lecture series. Some examples include the Holocaust Lecture Series, Green Building Lectures, and celebrated authors. These archived events, and live events, are available for viewing on the Streaming Media website. Windows Media Player 9 (available for both Mac OS X and Windows 2000/XP) is required.

Check the Streaming Media website for more information and schedules for Fall events.

WebCT

WebCT is the learning management system used at SSU. Many faculty choose to include online course content, email, discussions and other web technology in their face-to-face classes, and WebCT is the tool they use. You can access WebCT through the Online Services login with your SeaWolf ID. The IT Web Office provides assistance to students who need technical support for WebCT.

Check the WebCT Support site or more information about using your WebCT account, Frequently Asked Questions and more.
