Wireless Computing at SSU

Sonoma State University has created a wireless network on campus. Using wireless technology in campus classrooms and other areas allows SSU to more efficiently and economically provide wider access to network resources.
NOTE: Students are not allowed to install wireless access points in the Residence Halls or elsewhere. All network equipment (such as hubs, routers, switches, wireless access points and Airport base stations) must be approved by Information Technology. See Network Equipment Policy for further details.
Wireless connectivity is slower than our wired connections (11Mbps versus 100Mbps) and there may be instances when the need for higher bandwidth makes using a wired connection preferable. However, for many applications, such as web browsing and email, our wireless connectivity should be sufficient. Some examples of situations when wireless is not preferred include streaming video and audio, heavy or intense file transfers, graphical virtual consoles, or applications that shouldn't operate over an unsecured network, such as un-encrypted remote system administration, or work with confidential files.
