WebCT Down Due to Disk Problems

Affected Users:

Students, faculty and staff who use WebCT.

Message:

The WebCT server is down. It began experiencing disk-related problems Sunday night. Information Technology disabled all WebCT logins Monday. Following Sun Microsystem's recommendations, we have added new disk drives and are in the process of copying over the 4.2 million files that are WebCT's data to these new drives.

The copy process of WebCT data to the new drive is scheduled to complete in the early morning hours, Wednesday. We plan to assess the situation the first thing Wednesday morning and, if all looks good, put it back into production.

Update, Wednesday Morning:

The copy process of WebCT data to a new drive did not complete in the early morning hours, instead it is looks like it will complete early this afternoon (Wednesday). We plan to assess the situation then and, if all looks good, put it back into production.

Update, Wednesday Evening:

It now appears that WebCT will not be back in production until this weekend. WebCT has advised us that the best results will be obtained if we retrieve WebCT data from backup tapes. The tape restoral process was started at approximately 5:30 PM on Wednesday evening. Given the extraordinary time it has taken for a disk-to-disk copy, we do not have a useful estimate of when all WebCT data will be restored from tape.

Further updates about WebCT will be sent via ITNews-L, posted here, and on the Online Services login.
