Troubleshooting a Network Problem

Before calling the Helpdesk to report a network probem please check the following:

  1. Does your computer have a network card installed?
    If not, you will need to purchase one and have it installed. See network card information.
  2. Is one end of the network cable plugged into the appropriate jack?
    See outlet configuration for your room.
  3. Is the other end of your network cable plugged into your computers network card?
    See instructions for plugging in network cable.
  4. Verify that you are using a newtwork cable and not a phone cable.

  5. Verify that you have correctly followed the instructions for configuring your computer.
    See list of configuration instructions for supported operating systems.
  6. The IT Helpdesk will need some information to process your request and provide the assistance you need. Please be ready to provide the following:
    • Your first and last name
    • Your building name and room number
    • Your telephone number
    • The kind of computer you are using (PC or Mac)
    • The operating system you are using
    • The number on the wall outlet (in the form of Rxxxx-xxx) and the color of the jack (Blue or Orange)
