Windows 2000 Network Setup

  1. Right click on the My Network Places icon on your desktop and select Properties.
  2. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
  3. Double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Select Obtain an IP address automatically and select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

  4. Click on the Advanced button (bottom left).
  5. Now click on the DNS tab. Select Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes and make sure Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix is checked.
  6. Enter "sonoma.edu" into the DNS suffix for this connection field.
  7. Uncheck Register this connection's addresses in DNS.

  8. Now click on the WINS tab. Make sure Enable LMHOSTS lookup is not checked. Select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server.

  9. Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window. Click OK again to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Click OK a third time to close the Local Area Connection Properties window. If prompted, do not restart your PC, as this may cause your machine to freeze. Instead, click No, close all applications, and then restart your PC using the Start | Shutdown | Restart method.
  10. To test, simply run a TCP/IP client such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. If problems occur, double-check the TCP/IP settings.
