Windows XP Network Setup

  1. Go to Start > Network Connections > and right click on Local Area Connection and go to Properties
  2. Double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Select Obtain an IP address automatically and select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

  4. Click on the Advanced button (bottom right).
  5. Now click on the DNS tab. Select "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" and make sure "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix" is checked.
  6. Enter “sonoma.edu” into the DNS suffix for this connection field.
  7. Uncheck Register this connection’s addresses in DNS.

  9. Now click on the WINS tab. Make sure Enable LMHOSTS lookup is not checked. Select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server.

  11. Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window. Click OK again to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Click OK a third time to close the Local Area Connection Properties window. If prompted, do not restart your PC, as this may cause your machine to freeze. Instead, click No, close all applications, and then restart your PC using the Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart method.
  12. To test, simply run a TCP/IP client such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. If problems occur, double-check the TCP/IP settings.


Special Network Settings

Certain settings on your computer can also disrupt the network. Make sure your computer is configured according to the instructions below. Your roommates and those in the surrounding buildings will thank you!

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections > Click on adapter.
  2. Make sure NONE of the settings are checked.

Network Connections Properties-Advanced Settings: Internet Connection Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing options must be turned off.
