ITDS is unique in that students are first accepted into the program and then in their second or third semester they are asked to submit a Program Proposal outlining the course of study that will be their ITDS degree. It is not until this Program Proposal is approved that the classes the student identifies as part of their program will officially count towards their degree. This is one of the many reasons student need to submit the proposal before they have completed half of the units in their program.

The first step in applying to the ITDS program is to apply for admission to the Sonoma State University. Admission criteria is a minimum GPA of 3.0 and the student's program can be organized around a topic or a cross-disciplinary inquiry that is original and involves course work in more than one department. It is a good idea to meet with the ITDS coordinator before applying to determine whether the program is right for you. For application filing dates and other admissions information go the Admissions and Records site. Applications for the Fall semester close the last day of March and for the Spring semester the last day of October.

To review the steps:

1. Apply by filling out two applications: 1) a Sonoma State University application and designating ITDS as the program you are applying to, and 2) the ITDS Masters Application.

2. You may want to meet with the graduate coordinator before applying to see if ITDS is right for you.

3. After being accepted to the University, meet with the ITDS coordinator to discuss the proposal process.

4. In your second or third semester of taking classes at SSU you should submit your program proposal. This will give you time to become more informed about your subject matter and make some connections with SSU faculty who may be interested in working with you as a chair or committee member. The proposal must be submitted before half of the units in the proscribed program are completed.

5. Once your program proposal has been accepted you primarily work with your committee to define the requirements for completion of your degree. If you are taking ITDS 499 or ITDS 599A & 599B your committee determines the requirements for your culminating project and the method of evaluation.

6. As you near the end of your program you must submit the Completion of Requirements form, signed by the ITDS coordinator, to Admissions and Records.
