Archaeological Specialist

Position

Under supervision, the Archaeological Specialist will coordinate fieldwork and/or lab analyses, write portions of technical reports, and prepare graphics and maps. The Specialist will conduct pre- and post-field research; act as a team member or leader on an archaeological survey, excavation, and/or laboratory team; coordinate the work of others (including students) in collecting and analyzing archaeological data; write technical reports; prepare graphics; and format final documents. Duties include, but are not limited to: prepare archaeological survey, evaluation, or data recovery reports; complete special studies of artifice type; excavate and record archaeological sites; coordinate the activities of a team to complete a small project. It is anticipated that this position will involve a mixture of field, lab, and report tasks. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Three years of relevant experience and an MA in Archaeology/Anthropology or CRM or related field is preferred. Substantial relevant experience may be substituted for the MA. A demonstrated specialty (e.g., prehistoric or historical archaeology, GIS, or mapping) is required. Demonstrated ability to schedule and prioritize work, and to budget and track a small project. Skilled in standard methods and procedures associated with archaeological survey and excavation. Ability to present and follow oral and written procedures effectively; to work cooperatively and to organize others in accomplishing project goals; ability to effectively communicate with and coordinate the work of others; and to conduct independent research. Knowledge of basic prehistoric and 19th century material culture and archaeological cataloguing are essential. Understanding of stratigraphic and arbitrary excavation techniques and an understanding of legal context of cultural resources management. Ability to recognize archaeological sites in the field; to complete archaeological site record forms; and excavation records to the appropriate standard; and to prepare reports or sections of technical reports in MS Word and Excel. Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, to walk long distances; and to engage in sustained physical labor required. Must be will and able to travel by car.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range is 3,067 to 4,595 a month.  Starting salary placement will not exceed the beginning of the range. This is a full time, temporary, non-exempt position.
