Staff Editor/Archaeologist

Position
This position combines two job titles, both at the same classification level. Under general supervision, the Staff Editor will review and edit technical reports on archaeological surveys, evaluations, and data recovery projects as well as popular and interpretive products. The Staff Editor works with the report author to assure accuracy of the product, and works with the Production Specialist to provide guidance for its successful completion. The Archaeologist I is a professional level staff member, who acts as a team leader in the review and preparation of research designs and treatment plans; coordinates archaeological studies and prepares technical reports on these investigations, including standard Section 106 and CEQA documents. Supervisor reviews work assignments in some detail and approves outline of the work products; makes periodic checks as to the general progress of the task; and reviews the final product in some detail. The Archaeologist I will work with students in a teaching and mentoring capacity. In compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Staff Editor/Archaeologist I is classified as an exempt employee and is not eligible for overtime. Some evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs, including but not limited to emergencies.
Qualifications
An M.A. in Archaeology/Anthropology or CRM or related field, with special interest in and aptitude for editing and writing, and at least three years full-time experience in writing and editing reports on archaeological investigations. The successful candidate must meet criteria for certification as a Registered Professional Archaeologist; possess expertise in the writing, editing, and review of standard Section 106 and CEQA documents; demonstrate in-depth knowledge of regional prehistory and history; have experience in conducting archaeological projects; and have a publication record demonstrating original research. The Editor/ Archaeologist I must have a thorough knowledge of the principles of cultural resources management and of California archaeology, including experience in a wide range of projects, and familiarity with regional research sources. Demonstrated expertise in the completion of standard Section 106 documents, in the application of archaeological methods and theories, and in supervisory level analysis and reporting on a variety of archaeological projects. Ability to plan, organize, conduct and participate in excavations; ability to see subtle relationships between various types of data; ability to approach problems objectively; ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically and to reconcile divergent points of view; ability to successfully work direct personnel in stressful situations; ability to draw conclusions and develop management recommendations; ability to prepare high-quality written reports. Experience that demonstrates excellent judgment and outstanding interpersonal skills; a positive and respectful attitude toward all people; leadership; creativity; flexibility; and the ability to work in a professional, fast-paced environment, anticipating problems while mitigating their impact is essential. Ability to work with students in a mentoring capacity. The candidate must be capable of physical labor often required during field investigations and cognizant of safety issues involved in archaeological investigations. May regularly sit and work at a keyboard for up to eight hours a day. Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, to walk long distances, and to engage in sustained physical labor, are all required. Must be willing and able to travel throughout the state, including overnight stays. Valid driver’s license and good driving record are required.

Salary and Benefits
The salary range is $4,161 to $6,243 a month. Starting salary placement will not exceed the beginning of the range. This is a full time, temporary, exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations.
