Staff Prehistoric Archaeologist

Position
Under general supervision, the Staff Prehistoric Archaeologist I will conduct archaeological surveys and prehistoric site evaluations and data recovery projects, and prepare standard Section 106 and CEQA reports on the findings. Study plans are coordinated in some detail with a supervisor and the outline of the study is approved in advance. Supervisor makes periodic checks as to the general progress of the study and reviews the final product in some detail. The Archaeologist I is a professional level staff member, who acts as a team leader in the preparation of research designs and treatment plans; coordinates archaeological studies and prepares technical reports on these investigations. The Archaeologist I will work with students in a teaching and mentoring capacity. In compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Archaeologist I is classified as an exempt employee and is not eligible for overtime. Some evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs, including but not limited to emergencies.
Qualifications
An M.A. in Archaeology/Anthropology or CRM or related field, with an emphasis on California Prehistory and at least three years of experience supervising archaeological investigations. The successful candidate must meet criteria for certification as a Registered Professional Archaeologist; demonstrate experience in conducting prehistoric archaeological projects; and have a publication record demonstrating solid research. The Archaeologist I must have a thorough knowledge of the principles of cultural resources management and of California Prehistory, including experience in a wide range of field investigations. The archaeologist must also possess demonstrated expertise in the completion of standard Section 106 documents, in the application of archaeological methods and theories, in directing heavy equipment (backhoes and excavators) on archaeological projects, and in supervisory-level excavation, analysis, and reporting on a variety of archaeological deposits. Ability to plan, organize, conduct and participate in excavations; ability to see relationships between various types of data; ability to approach problems objectively; ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically and to reconcile divergent points of view; ability to successfully manage personnel in stressful situations; ability to utilize statistical and various analytical research methods; ability to draw conclusions and develop management recommendations; ability to prepare high-quality written reports; and the demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with interested parties, including Native American tribes. Demonstration of excellent judgment and outstanding interpersonal skills; a positive and respectful attitude toward all people; leadership; creativity; flexibility; and the ability to work in a professional, fast-paced environment, anticipating problems while mitigating their impact is essential. Willingness to work with students in a mentoring capacity. The successful candidate must be capable of physical labor often required during field investigations and cognizant of safety issues involved in archaeological investigations. . Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds, to walk long distances, and to engage in sustained physical labor, are all required. Must be willing and able to travel throughout the state, including overnight stays. Valid driver’s license and good driving record are required.

Salary and Benefits
The salary range is $4,161 to $6,243 a month. Starting salary placement will not exceed the beginning of the range. This is a full time, temporary, exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations.
