Position

Under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Police and Parking Services/Chief of Police and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief, the Police Officer independently performs a variety of general law enforcement and patrol duties. Additionally, the Police Officer actively participates in the Community Oriented Policing Strategies employed at Sonoma State University. The primary responsibilities of the Police Officer is to protect students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property, and facilities from accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry; enforce laws and traffic regulations; apprehend violators; provide general information and assistance to the public; and assist in investigations. The incumbent will patrol campus buildings and grounds by foot or by vehicle; control crowds during assemblies or disturbances; guard property; investigate and prepare reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts, and disturbances of the peace; and gather evidence, make arrests, and appear in court as required. Work assignments may include enforcing parking regulations and issuing traffic citations; administering first aid to injured persons; and guarding or transporting cash funds. The Police Officer may also receive training and/or be delegated responsibility for additional work assignments that include: range master, field training officer, defensive tactics instructor, motorcycle patrol, bicycle patrol, crime prevention officer, and Critical Response Unit (CRU) member. Campus Police Officers must integrate their professional knowledge and duties with the culture of the academic environment to accomplish department goals and objectives. Officers are expected to promote a positive work environment, be creative and innovative in suggesting crime prevention/deterrence programs and participating in community events that encourage the same.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent along with meeting the qualifications to work as a California Peace Officer, including the successful completion within one year prior to employment of a P.O.S.T. certified training program. College level education and/or law enforcement experience in a college or university setting is preferred. The successful candidate must possess working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws; working knowledge of investigation techniques and procedures; ability to work independently and make sound judgments; working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures; effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations; effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports; demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations; a willingness to confront and if possible, resolve problems; and intermediate computer proficiency using related programs to include Microsoft Office Suite, internet, and email software. The Police Officer must be able to communicate effectively with the campus community; work effectively both independently and as part of a team; to read and write at the levels necessary to perform the job; quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations related to work performed; operate in an environment that requires discretion and confidentiality; take initiative in developing and improving skills; demonstrate reliable work history, dependability, integrity, good observation skills, and professional bearing; be able to enjoy working with people; and possess credibility as a witness in a court of law. A valid California Driver's License and successful completion of a physical agility test, oral interview, written examination, comprehensive background investigation, physical examination, psychological examination, and drug screening required.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will not exceed $4,744 a month.  The full salary range is $4,135 to $5,695 a month.  This is a full-time, non-exempt position that will lead to permanent status following the successful completion of a probationary period.
