Position

Under general supervision, the Food Service Worker I will assist in the preparation and/or serving of foods and beverages.  Individuals working in this classification will also be responsible for cleaning and maintaining culinary equipment and work areas within established standards.  Perform routine duties and provide general work direction to student assistants.  Duties may vary depending on the needs of the unit.  The duties typically performed by the Food Service Worker include routine work such as cashiering; rinsing, loading, and unloading dishwashing machines and storing dishes and utensils; washing and storing utensils, pots, and pans; preparing beverages by adding dry mixes, syrups, carbonation, water, and restocking milk and other beverage machines; serving food cafeteria style; cleaning kitchen areas, including sweeping and mopping; washing and paring fruits and vegetables; preparing and dispensing food; relieving cooks, bakers, or meat cutters by performing routine operations, such as stirring food, greasing bake pans, and grinding meat; assisting in food related work in the dining room; arranging trays; restocking condiment areas and food products; performing related duties at special events including setting up and breaking down buffet and dinner tables and performing duties of wait staff; and standing and moving for long periods of time.  Individuals working in this classification will provide work direction to student assistants.  The work schedule for this position varies and is based upon the operational needs of University Dining Services.  Schedule may include morning, nights, holidays, and weekends. 

Qualifications

Requires a working knowledge of the methods for cleaning and preparing foods for cooking and storing foods; proper methods of arranging dining room furniture, setting tables and serving meals; various types of food service utensils, and equipment; and sanitation and safety measures in a food service environment.  Requires the ability to portion servings; follow directions; keep records; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; work and maintain good relationships with others.  Requires excellent customer services skills; ability to provide effective leadership to student assistants working in this program; ability to work independently and have the ability to motivate self and others toward a common goal; ability to operate in a professional, fast-paced environment and work as a member of a team while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with members of the campus community; and ability to maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality.  Individuals working in this classification are required to obtain ServSafe certification within six months of employment.  This position requires the physical ability to lift and transport objects averaging 50 pounds, stand and walk for long periods of time, regularly use hands, fingers, and arms, speak and hear.

Salary and Benefits
