Under the work direction of the Research Lead, the Research Technician performs essential functions to support successful implementation of a specific scientific research project that seeks to understand plant/pollinator interactions between three species of endangered annual plants and insect/animal pollinators in the Santa Rosa Plain vernal pool system. Work will include, but not limited to, the identification of insect pollinators and description of natural history; annual plant identification; assessment of seed set in endangered annual plants; preparing data for presentations; writing and submitting progress reports; gathering and analyzing data; assembling and assisting in the collection and preliminary interpretation of field data; maintenance of tools and technical equipment; and providing other assistances to the Research Lead and Principal Investigator as requested. Other duties may include soil coring and soil seed bank quantification. Most work will be performed outdoors, with additional laboratory and computer work.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field is required. The incumbent will possess knowledge of or an ability to quickly learn how to collect and identify vernal pool plants and insects and use of GPS equipment. The successful incumbent will possess a working knowledge of research techniques; accepted methods of preparation of research reports; statistical principles and procedures, including methods of frequency series, data, simple correlation methods, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers; insect diversity and classification; microscopy techniques for small seed identification; and familiarity with vernal pool environments. In addition, the ability to compile clear and concise data or reports and summaries in different formats, i.e. graphic, tabular, pictorial, and/or written form; analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action; speak and write effectively; and perform physical tasks and field labor in inclement weather conditions is required. The successful candidate will have good attention to detail; have an understanding of field-based scientific research and ecological principles; work well both independently or as a team member; possess a working knowledge of MS Office; and have an intermediate skill level of MS Word, and Excel. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to regularly stand, walk long distances on uneven ground, reach with hands and arms, and handle and feel with fingers and hands; travel throughout Sonoma County; and lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 25 lbs. long distances. A valid driver’s license is required.

Salary and Benefits
The salary range is $17.67 to $26.51 an hour. Starting salary placement will not exceed the beginning of the range. This is an hourly intermittent, temporary, non-exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations. Benefits include vacation, sick, and holiday time earned in relation to hours worked.
