Position

Under the general supervision of the Executive Chef, the Grill and Prep Cook will cook to order menu items per their specifications and provide guidance to student assistants who are working grill shifts.  Specifically, the incumbent will cook grill menu items per the customer's expectations; support the Cook II, assisting in preparation of products for regular services and special events; assume full responsibilities for the preparation of food items for grill specials and demonstrate knowledge of executing such items for volume cooking; stock and rotate food products based upon first in, first out method of inventory; clean grill fryer twice per week; prepare suggestions for weekly grill specials within specific food costs and submit to the Operations Manager for approval; assume an active role in all training and orientation programs for student assistants; follow health and safety guidelines; meet or exceed local health codes and applied food handling skills; and maintain accurate records of time and temperature reports for grill activity, as well as, other production activities.  In addition, the Grill and Prep Cook may perform other duties, as assigned, and as deemed necessary for the effective operation of University Dining Services, including working under the general lead of the Cook II to prepare, cook, and dispense food; clean work areas and equipment; receive and store supplies per written guidelines; and frequently lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  The Grill and Prep Cook is expected to provide an exemplary level of customer service, which creates positive public relations.  Early morning, swing, or evening shifts may be required and will be specified by the supervisor to meet operational needs.  Scheduling will include the working of holidays. 

Qualifications

Requires one year of experience performing the duties of a Food Service Worker I, or equivalent to one year experience in assisting a cook in the preparation and cooking of a varied menu.  The Grill and Prep Cook must possess a working knowledge of kitchen sanitation, food handling, food principles and procedures for volume, and safety measures; the ability to become ServeSafe certified with a passing score of 85% or greater; a working knowledge of cleaning and caring of utensils, equipment, and work area and be able to apply these principles consistently; and excellent written and oral communication skills.  The successful candidate must possess the ability to prepare, cook, and dispense food in large quantities; demonstrate methods and procedures used in kitchen operation; successfully prepare and cook all food groups; follow oral and written instructions; keep records; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; handle multiple food orders while prioritizing cooking times and order in which grill requests were submitted; accept criticism and feedback and work towards incorporating this feedback into improving job tasks; work in a stressful environment; participate cooperatively on a team and actively resolve conflicts; maintain acceptable and regular attendance and punctuality; and be committed to a high standard of safety and willing to report safety violations to the appropriate staff.  As this position is service orientated and a high level of customer contact, it is imperative the Grill and Prep Cook has the ability to work and maintain excellent relationships with people.  This position requires the ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 50 pounds; use fingers, hands, arms; bend, kneel, and reach; work in a close environment with high temperatures; and successfully pass a pre-placement physical examination.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range is $2,418 to $3,627 a month.  Starting salary placement will not exceed the beginning of the range.
