Short Term Temporary Position
Position
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Outreach Services, the Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Outreach Advisor is responsible for implementation and coordination of a comprehensive recruitment, outreach, and academic advising plan for the UBMS participants based on identified program needs, budget allocations, partnership agreements, and liaison work with target school sites. The Outreach Advisor is responsible to provide academic advisement and follow-up of UBMS participants at school sites, learning centers, and Saturday Academy; meet with students individually and in groups to ensure participation and adherence to program guidelines; monitor students academic performance; provide recommendations and participate in the development of the plans for appropriate intervention; work closely with school site contacts/counselors to ensure the academic development of program participants; provide instructional workshops and presentations for participants and staff; assist with the completion of college admission and financial aid/scholarship forms; support Saturday Academy program as directed; provide recruitment presentations to potential applicants and parents; participate in the selection process; and assist in the development of six-week summer residential programs including live-in and lead responsibilities of the residential staff. Other functions are to assist in the development and implementation of the Parent Empowerment component; provide parent advising as needed; provide recruitment statistical updates; monitor student progress and maintain accurate student records, including alumni participants; document outreach services and produce detailed reports as required; refer students to appropriate community/social agencies for support; attend and participate in staff and other job-related meetings and committees as necessary; work on special projects including development of internships; and organize and participate in social, cultural and educational field trips. Work hours vary and often include evening, overnights and weekends.
Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate academic area and a minimum of three years experience in developing and implementing support services for low income, potential first generation college students and/or students. Prior advising, teaching, training, and tutoring experience at the secondary school or college level is preferred; experience and/or sensitivity working with a diverse student population, including those from low income, first generation backgrounds; and a working knowledge of the practices and activities of TRIO and PreCollege programs are required. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is highly desired. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication and listening skills; ability to work well both independently and as a team player; mature judgment and the ability to make good decisions, understanding the impact from a broad view; possess initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and implementing program activities; the ability to coordinate and evaluate program efforts; manage multiple projects under strict deadlines; knowledge of learning strategies, academic skill development, and appropriate grade level assessments; have a strong academic record coupled with success in overcoming obstacles similar to those of the target population; knowledge of the college preparation and placement processes; and the ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and the community. An intermediate level of proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and FileMaker Pro is required. A current California driver’s license, valid insurance and reliable transportation are required at the time of hire. The ability and willingness to travel throughout Sonoma County for site visits, as well as travel throughout the state and nation by car/air for conferences and meetings are required. Must successfully pass a background check and fingerprint clearance at the time of hire.

Salary and Benefits
The salary range is $3,519 to $5,002 a month. Starting salary placement is not expected to exceed the beginning of the range. This is a full time, temporary (November 16, 2009 – February 12, 2010), exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations.
