Position

Under direct supervision, the Custodian will work as part of a team to sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors; clean classrooms and laboratories; wash lavatories, locker rooms, blackboards, windows, and Venetian blinds; replenish lavatory supplies; empty wastebaskets and remove trash; unlock and lock doors and windows; safeguard buildings and equipment from unauthorized use; cooperate with students, staff, and faculty in moving furniture and equipment in laboratories, classrooms, and auditoriums; assist in special activities such as athletic events, assemblies, and graduation exercises; and respond to specific work orders for special needs, to include cleaning and extraction of carpets and the moving of furniture and /or equipment.  Essential job functions include disarming alarms; arranging furniture; leveling chalkboards and replenishing chalk; removing graffiti from all horizontal and vertical surfaces; dusting televisions and furniture; removing cobwebs; dusting office furniture and vents; vacuuming offices, classrooms, chalkboards, erasers, stairwells, and restrooms; thoroughly cleaning restrooms and drinking fountains; dust mopping and wet mopping tile floors; cleaning floor mats to be free of dust, debris, and stains; stripping, refinishing, buffing, and auto scrubbing tile floors; shampooing carpets; sanding and refinishing wood floors; keeping custodial closets neat, organized, and containers labeled, carts clean and organized, and equipment cleaned and in good working condition; fully stocking paper and soap supplies; unclogging drains; reporting problems and leaks; and checking that windows are closed, classrooms locked, and alarms secured.  At this time, normal hours of work are Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.  Overtime maybe required and will be specified by the supervisor to meet operational needs for special performance and University events. 

Qualifications

One year of custodial experience is preferred for the position.  Requires knowledge of how to perform basic restroom cleaning, office cleaning and floor care.  Incumbent must possess the ability to use and operate basic custodial equipment e.g. dust mop, wet mop, vacuum cleaner (backpack and upright); exercise good judgment when handling chemicals and operating equipment; read, write and perform mathematical functions at a level appropriate to position.  The Custodian must possess the ability to work independently or within the framework of a team; adjust schedule and work assignments to address urgent operational needs or scheduling conflicts; work in a fast paced environment and still be thorough in work; adapt to changes in the work environment; maintain regular and acceptable punctuality and attendance; be committed to high standards of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws, policies and rules; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; prioritize and perform multiple tasks; provide outstanding customer service for students, staff, faculty and visitors; carry a backpack vacuum and vacuum for up to 8 hours, frequently be able to stoop, bend, climb stairs, stand for long periods of time, ability to lift 50lbs; and successfully complete pre-placement physical.  Incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license.

Salary and Benefits
