General Information
The Upward Bound programs at Sonoma State University are dedicated to assuring that high school students from low-income and/or 1st generation college families are academically and motivationally prepared to attend college. These highly successful pre-collegiate programs provide participants with rigorous academic instruction, individual and group tutoring, career education, self-concept development, college placement, and social/cultural activities. Sonoma State University’s Upward Bound Programs help assure that students who participate are academically prepared to attend the university of their choice upon graduation from high school. Position
Working with University Support & Preparation Services and under general direction from the Project Director, Summer Instructors will teach two to four courses to high school students in one or more of the following subjects: math through pre-calculus, laboratory science, English (grammar, composition, and/or literature), Spanish, computer technology, CAHSEE and SAT preparation, study/life skills, or interdisciplinary electives relating to the summer program’s theme. Instructors will develop and implement class lessons for the following 6-week program:
- Summer/STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Academy program—Theme: The Wide World of Sports: Exploring Topics and Concepts in Math, Science, Literature and Language as They Apply to Sports—for Upward Bound high school students, Monday-Thursday, June 14– July 22, 2010, 8:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.;
Instruction will consist of two to four class periods per day, approximately 60 minutes each. In addition, all instructors will attend orientation, planning, training, and staff meetings.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required. A BA/S with a teaching credential and computer literacy is preferred. Expertise in at least one academic or "elective" content area; one-year experience teaching middle or high school students; and the ability to develop and implement curriculum in accordance with state standards are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of student-centered instructional methodologies; sensitivity to the needs and characteristics of low-income and potential first-generation college students; the ability to facilitate academic and motivational development for those students; and the ability to relate well to multi-cultural students and staff. A minimum of two classes per day is required. Fingerprint clearance is required.Qualification Note

Salary and Benefits
The salary range is from $91 to $260 per day, determined by professional certificate and the number of courses assigned. This is a temporary, part-time position. This position will not be extended beyond June 30, 2010, and does not provide for credit toward permanent status or eligibility for benefits.
