Position
Reporting to the Provost & Chief Academic Officer, the Director for Institutional Research provides data, analyses and reports for national Higher Education organizations, to the Chancellor’s Office, to the higher administration at Sonoma State University and to the campus community. The incumbent’s responsibilities include:
- Provides support to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer such as student to faculty ratios of SSU compared to all the other California State University campuses, creation of “Virtual School” student to faculty ratios, and extracting data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System.
- Collects data for the Voluntary System of Accountability posted on the SSU web site. This includes current enrollments, one-year retention for first-time freshmen and junior transfers tracked through the National Student Clearinghouse, the National Survey of Student Engagement, and the Collegiate Learning Assessment.
- Oversees the collection of data from all parts of the campus for the COPLAC data consortium.
- Coordinates the administration of national and local surveys (such as the Collegiate Learning Assessment, the National Survey of Student Engagement, Your First College Year, etc.) to SSU students, alumni, faculty and staff. Then analyzes the data and writes reports on the results within the context of national trends, SSU trends, and the CSU and COPLAC for comparisons.
- Provides SSU statistical data for reports required for national Higher Education organizations, the Chancellor’s Office, the public, and the SSU community.
- Maintains statistics on student enrollment in the Academic Schools and Departments, student demographics, student to faculty ratio, majors for departments, and the number of degrees for departments.
- Completes the Common Data Set each fall semester and posts the results on our Institutional Research web site.
- Oversees the completion of national surveys such as U.S. News and World Report, Peterson’s Guide to Colleges, etc.
- Writes and runs queries to get data out of PeopleSoft needed to respond to requests by the public, agencies such as Pick A Prof, and the SSU community.
- Responds to all requests for data from Institutional Research.
- Supervises the Data Coordinator for the Academic Planning Data Base which creates reports such as the Faculty Assignments by Department and the Course Section report.
- Daily monitors and posts enrollments by Academic Departments and Schools.
- Sits on several committees on campus such as the Academic Affairs Council, the President’s Diversity Council, the Academic Planning Committee of the Academic Senate, Extended Cabinet, the Student Retention Task Force, the Enrollment Management Council in SAEM, and the Joint Committee on Academic Planning in Academic Affairs.
- Creates on-line surveys using Snap Pro.
Qualifications
An M.S. in Social Sciences or a related field is required; a Ph.D. or Ed.D. is preferred; extensive knowledge of analyzing quantitative and qualitative data; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent attention to detail. The incumbent must possess the ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data; knowledge of database query and reporting software such as PeopleSoft queries, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and SPSS, SAS, or comparable statistical packages; the ability to work well with all members of the campus community and the people in the California State University Analytic Studies department; the ability to prioritize projects, set and meet deadlines, coordinate various reporting instruments; the ability to communicate on all levels with varied individuals and groups in order to assess needs and provide appropriate support; the ability to think analytically; and the ability to supervise and knowledge of SSU’s policies on this. The incumbent must exercise confidentiality and possess the ability to maintain integrity of files; possess an understanding of the Code of Ethics for Institutional Research.

Starting salary placement will be based on qualifications. The Director of Institutional Research is a member of the Management Personnel Plan and serves at the pleasure of the President.
