Teaching Hints:

Make sure that the students have the scoop in their throwing hand for these activities.

Description:

Warm up by doing theStar Juggling activity using the scoops to catch.

Play a modified version of Ultimate Frisbee using scoops and balls.

Modified Ultimate

Offense tries to score a goal by moving the ball up and down the field using only their scoops to throw and catch the ball while defense tries to intercept passes and gain control.

Goals are scored by throwing the ball with the scoop from the playing field to someone who is standing in the end zone. Each goal counts as 1 point. There are no goalies.

Person-on-person or 1-on-1 defense is played with at least 3 feet of personal space between people.

Start the game by RO-SHAM-BO. The winning team takes the ball out from the end zone that they are defending. They pass it into a player on their team and the game begins. When a goal is scored, game play continues/resumes in this fashion. The team that was just scored on takes the ball out in the end zone that they are defending.

If the ball goes out of bounds, the team that did not touch it last takes it out at the place of exit (same as an out of bounds ball in Basketball.)

Minor FoulsIf any of these fouls happen, the ball changes possession at the place of the foul.

There is no walking when you have the ball in your scoop.

There is no kicking the ball.

There is no touching the ball with your hand – the only thing that may touch the ball is the scoop.

Major FoulsIf these fouls happen, the offending player is issuead a 1 - 2 minute time-out at the teacher's discretion.

There is no blocking, holding, tripping, or hitting opponent with the scoop.

Alternatives/Modifications

This activity can be played without scoops using Frisbees or Gator balls.

Change the end zone to just a large trash can and the students have to throw the ball at the trash can to get a point. If you play this way, assign “zones” to the students – dived the field into 4 equal quadrants. The rule is that you must stay in your zone at all times. After each goal is scored, have the students rotate to a new zone.
