Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive):

To improve fitness while having fun.

Teaching Hints:

Emphasize to the students about safe running and tagging, and that you don't always have to be running to stay away from the guards (strategy). Many of my students have figured this out and simply keep their eyes on the guards and make sure they are as far away from them at all times, sometimes just standing in a corner until a guard approaches.

Description:

Before you begin, make a "jail" with the cones at one end or corner of the gym.

Children are seated in a circle where the teacher picks 3 "Jail guards". These 3 students wear the pinnies so they are easily visible, and go to the opposite side/corner of the gym. The rest of the students are the prisoners, and go to the jail.

When everyone is ready, the teacher yells "JAILBREAK!" and all students in the jail run around the gym in any direction. The teacher then yells "Here come the jail guards!" The guards then attempt to catch and return the prisoners to the jail. They must tag and walk them back to the jail.

There are two endings for the game...

  1. The last prisoner running around wins and is now a guard.
  2. If the last prisoner successfully tags anyone inside the jail, another "jailbreak" has occured and the game starts all over!
