Teacher & School: Zack Dee, Petaluma Junior High
Activity Grade Level
Buggy Rides K - 1
Equipment Needs
  • 1 scooter per pair of students
  • Rope (or something like it for the students to hold onto)
  • Cones or other objects to mark a path
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To help children learn to work together and use appropriate social skills.
Teaching Hints:

should work together safely and politely.

The horse needs to wait for the rider to be sitting on the scooter and ready before they take off.

Emphasize the importance of going slow so that the rider doesn't get pulled off.

Make sure the students understand not to stand on the scooters.

Point out for the riders to watch their fingers so they don't get caught underneath the scooters.

Description:

Students will be going on a buggy ride. Each of them will have a chance to be the rider and the horse. They will need to tell their "horse" to begin by saying "giddy-up."

One child sits on the scooter while the other one pulls. If there are three kids in a group the third one can help push. Emphasize that the horse must wait for the rider to say "giddy up" and follow a designated path on the floor at a slow speed. After completing the course, the students change roles.

Alternatives/Modifications

Instead of having a designated path to follow mark a boundary which the students must stay in. The rider can direct the horse by telling them which way to go. They should not be running into other groups
