Scooter-mania K - 1
Equipment Needs

For each set of partners:

  • One scooter
  • One length of rope
  • Two hula hoops
  • Many small soft objects
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To help children understand how to work cooperatively with a partner.
Teaching Hints:
  • Make sure students are using scooters correctly and safely.
  • Stress to the students that this is not a race, but rather a chance to have fun and see how well they can work together with a partner.
Description:

Students will be paired up. One student will lay or sit on the scooter while the other pulls with a length of rope.

The goal of the activity is for the student on the scooter to transport one soft object at a time from a pile in a hoop in one designated area to a hoop in another designated area as she/he rides on the scooter. The other partner must use their creativity to find a way to safely pull the scooter rider. Once all the objects are piled in the second hoop, students can both practice balancing the objects on various body parts until all groups are finished and you are ready to begin again. When everyone is finished have students turn to their partners and compliment them on what they did well.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Students can switch partners after both have ridden on the scooter.
  • Have students show the rest of the group the creative ways they have found to safely pull their scooter partner to a hoop.
