Teacher & School: Zack Dee, Petaluma Junior High
Activity Grade Level
Traffic Tag K - 2
Equipment Needs None. The teacher may play music during the activity if they so desire.
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop would work best, but the field will also work.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To get students to trust one another. To have students work in pairs and cooperate.
Teaching Hints:
  • Stress the importance of keeping their eyes close. The cars need to trust their drivers.
  • Remind drivers to be careful and not run their cars too hard into anyone else.
  • Make sure everyone is moving at a safe speed.
  • Make sure the ground is clear of all obstacles that may present a safety concern.
Description:

: Students are divided into pairs. One person is designated as the car, while the other is the driver. The “cars” hold their hands out in front (imitating headlights) and CLOSE THEIR EYES. Drivers keep their eyes open and steer cars by standing in back and placing their hands on their partner’s shoulders. One set of car and driver is chosen to be “it.” As in the traditional game of tag, the person who is it tries to tag another player. In this game, cars tag only cars. Drivers carefully maneuver cars around other cars, trying to avoid getting tagged. Speeding is not allowed. When the car that is “it” tags another, the car that was tagged then becomes it. Halfway through have the cars and drivers switch places.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Have cars and drivers perform different locomotor movements.
