Parachute fun K - 2
Equipment Needs
  • Parachute
  • Several soft objects (such as a nerf or foam ball)
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop or field
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To have the students work together to complete a goal.
Teaching Hints:
  • You can use the parachute to introduce the students to a variety of different things such as directionality (forward, backward, sideways, up, down, etc.), locomotor skills (skipping, walking, hopping, jumping, etc.), and speed/force (fast, slow, light, heavy) while moving with the parachute.
Description:

There are a variety of different activities which you can do with your students. Here is a list of some so that you can use:

  1. Mushroom: Have the students lift the parachute above their heads and make it rise higher by taking 3 or 4 steps toward the center. The parachute will resemble a mushroom.
  2. Popcorn: The students ‘flutter’ or make waves with the parachute with several light objects in the center of the chute creating a popcorn affect.
  3. Making Waves: Tell the students that the parachute is a pond and that a light breeze is rippling the water. Then ask them to make larger and larger waves as the storm intensifies.
  4. Team Keep up: Divide students into two teams, one on each side of the parachute. Have them make waves to keep a ball up. The object is to bounce the ball off the chute and over the heads of the opposing team.
  5. Umbrella Exchange: Spread out the chute and have students situated around the outside. Number the students from one to three. On a signal, the group inflates the chute and the teacher calls out a number. Children of the number called run under the chute and switch places with a person of the same number. The group must keep the chute up until everyone has switched safely.
  6. Ball roll around the edge: The students hold the chute at waist level. A ball is placed on top. The objective is to roll the ball around the edge, first in one direction then the other. This activity involves the entire class. The students can also try to get a ball through the hole in the center.
