Equipment Needs

For each group:

  • One hula-hoop
Facility/Playground Needs Start off in an open area such as the blacktop or field.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To have students cooperate with each other to achieve a common goal.
Teaching Hints:
  • Suggest different ways to move (e.g. jumping, hopping, skipping, or moving at different levels.
  • Let students know you will be looking for groups which work together and listen to everyone’s ideas.
Description:

Place hoops throughout the activity area. Divide the class into groups of no more than eight people. Smaller groups will also work. Have each group gather around a hoop. All students in the group pick up the hoop at the same time. Make sure that all participants understand that they cannot let go of the hoop. Take the group through doorways and other small areas. The group must work together to accomplish this feat. They will need to figure out how to get through each area with the hoop while everyone is holding onto it.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Have the group put the hoop on the ground and pick it up with different parts of their body: elbows, right/left foot, knees, etc.
  • Have each group come up with creative ways to pick up the hoop.
  • Set up some type of obstacle course with tight areas and places where the students will have to go under an object. Have each group go through the obstacle course and look for groups, which work well together.
