Teacher & School: Zack Dee, Petaluma Junior High
Activity Grade Level
Animals 1 - 2
Equipment Needs
  • Cones to mark the area if outside.
Facility/Playground Needs Any open area outside will work best, but this activity can be done inside.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To have students work on their communication and listening skills.
Teaching Hints:
  • Remind students not to cheat and to keep their eyes closed.
  • After playing call the class together and asked them what made it easy or hard to find the other animals.
  • Remind students to move at safe speed since they will have their eyes closed.
  • Make sure the ground is clear of all obstacles that may present a safety concern.
Description:

The teacher selects three animal names, (such as chickens, cats, or dogs) then quietly whispers each name to one third of the class. On the signal from the teacher, the children start to walk and find a place in the playing area and close their eyes. When everyone is standing with their eyes closed, they begin to make a sound of the animal they have been given. Then they try to find another child who is the same animal and link arms. Players must keep their eyes closed and communicate only by making the sound of their animal.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Play the same game except require each student to find and link arm with a different animal besides their own.
  • Play until all the dogs have found each other, all the cats, etc.
  • Have students' move using different locomotor movements
