Equipment Needs

For each group:

  • One tug of war rope. If not available, jump ropes tied together or clothesline rope will work.
Facility/Playground Needs A large open space such as the blacktop.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To have students work together. Students should work on listening to other’s ideas and communicating their ideas to the group.
Teaching Hints:
  • Give the groups a variety of shapes to make such as letters, numbers, words, names, or designs.
  • Stress the importance of watching out for others. They will be lying next to each other from head to foot so they need to be careful not to kick anyone.
Description:

The groups can be as big or small, as you would like them. The rope(s) should be placed in the center of the area being used, coiled up. If there is more than one group, space the ropes out to give each group enough room to work without getting in the way of other groups.

The teacher gives the group(s) a list of shapes. Every group can be given the same list or they can all build different shapes. The group must lay down the rope in the shape selected and lay their bodies over the rope. The challenge is mastered when the group completes each of the number of shapes you have assigned. All group members must be part of each shape created. The rope must be completely covered by the group members each time a shape is created. The teacher must approve the shape before the group can move on to the next one.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Have the students work in different size groups.
  • Mix the groups up after completing all the assigned shapes.
  • Give the groups a time limit and have them compete against the clock.
  • Give each group a list of shapes. The shapes will have different point values. The point value represents the difficulty of the shape, with 1 being the easiest.
  • Give the students a time limit and see how many they can accumulate.
