Activity Grade Level
The Glob 3 - 6
Equipment Needs
  • Cones to mark playing area.
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop or field. If using the field, check to make sure that the grass is dry before playing.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To encourage students to work together in a safe and positive manner.
Teaching Hints:
  • Before beginning the activity explain to the students that they will need to work together in a group to successfully participate in this activity. If needed, discuss what cooperation means.
  • After playing the game bring the students in and discuss what strategies the “globs” used in order to work well together (they moved at the same speed: thought about all those in their group, not just themselves, etc.).
  • Be sure to stress safety of NOT pulling hands too hard when in the glob.
  • If someone falls down or hands “break”, the group must stop instantly and wait until everyone is ready again.
  • This game can also be used as a warm-up before doing another activity.
Description:

Have students spread out in the general space within the boundaries and then choose 2 students to be the “globs”. On the signal, the remaining students try to avoid being tagged by the globs. The globs travel separately throughout the playing area (they don’t hold hands to start). If a person gets tagged, he/she holds hands (or they can hook elbows) with the “glob” and continues to try and catch the rest of their remaining classmates.

Once 6 people make up one glob they can split into two groups of 3--but they can only split if they have enough for three in a group. Play until one or two people are left who haven’t been tagged. Start the game over with these students beginning as the “globs”.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Have the two globs at the beginning start off as one.
  • Don’t have the globs split into smaller globs. As the game continues the “globs” get bigger and are harder to maneuver around. The students will have to find a way to control the bigger globs.
