Activity Grade Level
Minefield 3 - 6
Equipment Needs
  • Blindfolds for each student
  • Various size and shaped equipment to spread throughout the designated space
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop.
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): To have students experience the loss of their sight and to work on their communication skills.
Teaching Hints:
  • Make sure the students understand not to run their partner into other people.
  • Emphasize the importance of safely leading their partner through the course.
  • You can also tie in trust and responsibility during discussions about communication.
Description:

Scatter the equipment all over the ground from one end of the activity area to the other. Have the students work in pairs. One partner wears a blindfold while the other works as a guide to instruct their partner across the minefield. The instructing partner is not to touch their partner at any time. Once they cross the minefield (i.e. activity area) they switch places. If they touch a mine at any time they are to switch places but they go back to the beginning.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Adding or subtracting equipment can make this activity harder or easier.
  • For younger students you can have the leader hold hands or lock elbows with their partner to help lead them through the obstacles.
