Activity Grade Level
Moving Islands 4 - 6
Equipment Needs
  • Four small portable mats or carpet squares, which are big enough for half the class to fit on.
Facility/Playground Needs Blacktop
Lesson Objective (Psychomotor and/or Cognitive): For students to cooperate to achieve a common goal and listen to everyone.
Teaching Hints:
  • Let students know you are not looking to see how fast they can do this activity, but for groups which work together and listen to everyone.
  • After one round gather students and discuss what made this activity work and what didn’t. After discussing strategy, break up and let them try again.
Description:

The class is divided into two groups. Mark a finish point at the opposite end of where the students will be starting. Each group gets two mats, which are placed one in front of the other. The groups stand on the front mat and lift the second one over their heads, putting it down closer to the finish line, and then stepping onto it. This process is repeated until each group has reached the finish. No player may touch the ground at any time during the event. If so, the group must return to the start.

Alternatives/Modifications
  • Make smaller groups and use smaller mats.
  • Mix up groups after a couple rounds.
  • Give students a time limit in which to complete this.
